Six fire engines and around 45 firefighters swarmed a kitchen fire in a flat on Balham High Road, South West London, on Monday evening. The blaze broke out just before 10pm in a three-storey block of flats above the station parade.

Emergency 999 operators guided the flat’s owner through fire survival advice as thick smoke filled the first floor. Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus rescued several residents, leading them to safety with smoke hoods.
