Despite efforts, nearby rowing boats couldn’t get to the victims in time. A quick decision was made to alert the Coastguard about the emergency unfolding just off Shoreham’s coast.
RNLI Lifeboat Launches Life-Saving Rescue
The Coastguard immediately called in Shoreham RNLI Lifeboat Station and HM Coastguard Shoreham for backup. By the time the lifeboat arrived, the pair were already far out of the harbour.
The two people in the water were swiftly rescued and taken aboard the inshore lifeboat, where crews got them warmed up safely back at the RNLI station.

The overturned scull was not forgotten — a coxed four from the local rowing club towed it back to Kingston Beach, bringing the dramatic morning at sea to a close.
