The UK has marked its first National Day for Victims and Survivors of Terrorism, remembering those who have lost their lives and recognising the lasting impact attacks can have on survivors, families and communities.

The inaugural national day was observed on Friday, 21 August, and will now take place annually on the same date.

A ceremony in central London brought together hundreds of victims and survivors, bereaved families, emergency responders and government representatives.

Those attending observed a two-minute silence in memory of people killed and affected by terrorism.

The day is intended not only as an act of remembrance but also to raise awareness of the specialist support available to people rebuilding their lives following terrorist attacks.

It follows years of campaigning by victims and survivors seeking greater recognition of their experiences and increased understanding of the long-term consequences of terrorism. A government consultation found overwhelming support for establishing a national day.

‘You have not been forgotten’

Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he was proud that the UK now had a national day dedicated to victims and survivors.

He said:

“There is something remarkable about how we come together as a country in those darkest moments.”

The Prime Minister acknowledged that while wider society eventually moves forward after an attack, those directly affected can live with its consequences for years.

He added:

“Today matters because it says you are not alone. You have not been forgotten.”

The Prime Minister said the occasion provided a moment to remember those who had been killed and recognise people who had survived acts of terrorism.

Survivors at heart of national day

The Government says the annual event will focus on remembering and recognising those affected by terrorism, helping victims and survivors access support and amplifying their experiences.

The date of 21 August also coincides with the United Nations’ International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism.

The National Day for Victims and Survivors of Terrorism will now be marked across the UK every year on 21 August.
