Amber Alert: Met Office Warns of Life-Threatening Floods in Northwest England and Wales
The Met Office has slammed out an amber warning for torrential rain across northwest England and northern Wales. The severe 24-hour alert kicks in at midday Wednesday, hitting hotspots like Manchester and Liverpool. Officials warn the flooding poses a serious “danger to life.”
Travel Chaos and Power Cuts Expected
Heavy downpours are set to wreak havoc on travel plans, with roads flooded and services disrupted. The Met fears some communities could become isolated, face power outages, and endure cancelled trains and buses. Fast-flowing or deep floodwaters will make conditions risky for drivers and pedestrians alike.
Besides the amber warning, a yellow rain alert covers vast swathes of northern England, the Midlands, and parts of Wales until 6am Thursday. Southern and eastern Scotland brace for yellow warnings too, lasting until 6pm Thursday.

The south coast won’t escape unscathed. Thunderstorms loom on Wednesday, with lightning strikes adding to heavy rain troubles under a yellow warning from 8am to 7pm. The weather could put a damper on Valentine’s Day plans for many.

Met meteorologist Alex Burkill says persistent heavy rain is on the cards all day Wednesday. While most areas will get 30-40mm, some spots could be drenched with 60-80mm. Upland zones might even face a deluge of up to 150mm.
