A tense 40-hour siege in Pagham, West Sussex, finally ended peacefully early Tuesday morning. The 72-year-old man, holed up in his Harbour Road home, surrendered just after 8.45am on August 30, after refusing to leave since Sunday afternoon.

Man Threatens Arson, Police Hold Firm

Emergency services were first called to the property at 4.10pm on Sunday. The man had been in constant contact with police negotiators throughout the standoff. On Tuesday morning, he threatened to set fire to the house, sparking the deployment of ambulance and specialist response teams.

Safe Resolution and Arrest

At 8.42am, the man told officers he was leaving the house, stepping outside calmly and closing the door behind him. He was promptly arrested on suspicion of threats to kill and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Police Praise Patience and Professionalism

“This was a long, complex and challenging negotiation, but I am delighted to say it ended peacefully and safely, which was always our absolute priority,” said Acting Assistant Chief Constable Steve 1.

“I salute the professionalism and determination of all officers involved. We also thank local residents for their patience amid considerable disruption. Our ambulance and partner services offered unwavering support throughout.

There will be a continued police presence at the scene for some time, but most officers are now being stood down.”
