Openshaw Predator Locked Up for Sex Assault on 10-Year-Old Girl
A man from Openshaw has been jailed for five years after sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl near a canal path. Artus Kozlovskis, of Connie Street, pleaded guilty to the attack at Crown Square Crown Court on Friday 27 April 2018.
Horrifying Attack by the Canal
The court heard how Kozlovskis grabbed the young girl as she walked along the canal near Clayton Lane on 10 February 2018. He dragged her to a nearby wasteland close to Kincraig Close, covering her mouth to stop her calling for help during the assault.
The brave girl managed to escape when Kozlovskis paused to roll a cigarette. She ran to a dog walker, who quickly alerted police.
CCTV Footage Leads to Quick Arrest
Kozlovskis was caught on CCTV chasing the girl and later spotted at a corner shop, wearing a distinctive hooded top with a rose emblem. Police released his image to the public, leading to his swift identification and arrest within hours.
Detective Praises Community’s Role
“This 10-year-old girl was on her way to a friend’s house when Kozlovskis violently dragged her to the wasteland and sexually assaulted her,” said Detective Inspector Claire McGuire. “The community’s response has been incredible in supporting the girl and helping bring this predator to justice so quickly.”
Kozlovskis will serve five years in prison and face an additional three years on licence. He has also been slapped with a sexual harm prevention order.
Detective McGuire added: “While we cannot undo the damage of his sickening behaviour, I hope the girl and her family find some comfort knowing he will spend the next five years behind bars.”
