Huge Rubbish Fire Rages Overnight Near Horley
Firefighters battled a massive waste blaze that destroyed 300 tonnes of rubbish in Smallfield, near Horley. The fire broke out on Saturday evening and burned fiercely through the night.
Multiple Fire Crews Join the Fight
Teams from Surrey and West Sussex raced to the scene on Chapel Road, Smallfield. Crews from Salfords, Reigate, Godstone, Lingfield, plus water carriers from Leatherhead and Guildford, were all called in.
With smoke causing problems at nearby Gatwick Airport, extra fire engines were dispatched, including the High Volume Pump from Chertsey and the Leatherhead Aerial Ladder Platform. A hose layer from Egham also joined the fray.
Firefighters Still Battling Blaze After 15 Hours
More than 15 hours on, fire crews remain on site, working hard to fully extinguish the burning rubbish and wood. The relentless smoke plume has posed ongoing challenges for airport operations nearby.
