Three rescued by lifeboat during Isle of Wight fort walk

Three members of the public were brought to safety by Bembridge Inshore Lifeboat after getting into difficulty whilst taking part in the Bembridge & St Helens Fort Walk this evening (Saturday). The ‘RNLB Norman Harvey’ – Inshore Lifeboat D-778 – was launched at around 17:30 to provide a safety presence during this year’s annual Fort Walk. It wasn’t until towards the end of the walk – where approximately 4,500 people attended – it was discovered a father and two teenage sons were seen to be in considerable difficulty by the lifeboat crew. The lifeboat crew were able to reach the three casualties very quickly and were able to keep them afloat whilst they got them on board. Having checked them over, they then made their way towards the inner harbour entrance and handed the casualties over to Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team who had in the meantime called for an ambulance. Due to swelling copious amounts of sea-water, it was decided to take the father and two sons to St Marys Hosptial for precautionary measures. The ‘Norman Harvey’ lifeboat was then returned to Lane End in Bembridge and was recovered by 8.45pm.
