Drama at Bembridge & St Helens Fort Walk as Lifeboat Rescues Father and Sons
Three walkers needed a lifeline at this year’s Bembridge & St Helens Fort Walk after falling into trouble in a deep channel hole. The RNLB Norman Harvey inshore lifeboat launched around 5:30pm on Saturday to keep a close eye over the 4,500-strong crowd. What started as a festive walk turned tense when a father and his two teenage sons got into serious trouble late in the event.
Lifeboat Crew Spot Danger and Act Fast
The trio unexpectedly sank into a deep hole while crossing from St Helens to Bembridge Fort. Thanks to the quick reactions of the lifeboat crew, they were rescued swiftly. Lifeboat team managed to get to the family quickly, keeping them afloat before bringing them safely aboard the Norman Harvey.
Safe Hands Then Turned Over to Coastguard
After a quick check, the crew steered the lifeboat towards the inner harbour entrance. Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team, who had called for an ambulance, took over the scene. The ambulances were ready to give immediate aid.
Hospital Precautions After Sea Water Exposure
Given the large amount of sea water the father and sons swallowed, medics decided to take them to St Mary’s Hospital as a precaution. The lifeboat then returned to Bembridge’s Lane End, wrapping up the rescue by 8.45pm.
The swift lifeboat response turned what could have been a tragedy into a tale of expert rescue at this popular annual event.
