One Punch Horror in Scarborough Leaves Family Devastated
A Scarborough family’s world was shattered by a brutal one-punch attack that left Jamie Kelly fighting for his life. The 41-year-old suffered a catastrophic head injury after being punched once near a pedestrian crossing on Ramshill Road.
Father’s 9,000-Mile Vigil at Hospital
Jamie’s dad, Michael, drove more than 9,000 miles visiting his son every day while medics battled to save him at Hull Royal Infirmary. Neurosurgeons had to remove half of Jamie’s skull to treat a brain bleed. Though he shows slow signs of recovery, Jamie faces lifelong specialist care due to the severity of his injuries.
Attacker Locked Up After Guilty Plea
The man behind the attack, 32-year-old Daniel George Johnson from Cromwell Terrace, Scarborough, struck at 1.28pm on Wednesday 16 September last year. Johnson was arrested at the scene and charged with wounding with intent, but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of grievous bodily harm.
Johnson was sentenced to two years and five months in prison at York Crown Court on Monday 7 March 2022.
Police Urge Families to Learn from Tragedy
“This has been a truly horrendous experience for Jamie and especially for his parents who thought they were going to lose their son,” said Detective Constable Peter Day of Scarborough and Ryedale CID.
“No court outcome can undo the devastation caused by one punch. Jamie’s parents’ victim statements reveal the full catastrophic impact of this attack. I urge families to read them and ensure younger generations learn from this case.”
Jamie’s mum Brenda, dad Michael, and sister Michelle are left to pick up the pieces after a single, senseless punch changed their lives forever.
