The UK government has launched a powerful new Net Zero Council to turbocharge industry efforts to slash emissions and champion greener business practices. This high-level team of business and finance titans will meet quarterly to push Britain’s march to net zero.
Ministers and Industry Giants Join Forces

- Top firms like McKinsey, NatWest, Lloyd’s of London, and 123 are on board, eyeing a £1 trillion market bonanza by 2030 from green growth.
Energy Minister Hails Council as a Game-Changer
“The Net Zero Council provides the high-level forum for government, business and finance leaders to unlock the opportunities of the green transition,” said Energy Minister Graham Stuart.
“Cutting emissions will make businesses more energy efficient, slash costs, and bolster UK energy security. It will also open doors to export UK solutions worldwide, grow market share, and create jobs.”

Low Carbon Jobs and Sector Focus
In 2020, the UK already boasted over 400,000 green jobs generating £41.6 billion in turnover. New policies have added 80,000 jobs with forecasts hitting 480,000 by 2030.
The Council zoomed in on priority sectors needing support: construction, manufacturing, retail, water, and waste. It also highlighted the UK’s cutting-edge universities and R&D hubs fueling future tech breakthroughs like green aviation, hydrogen, carbon capture and storage (CCUS), and next-gen batteries.
Council’s Key Mission
- Map clear net zero pathways for sectors and companies, tackling cross-sector barriers.
- Lead a thorough review of financing hurdles and clarify government, industry, and finance roles.
- Support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) nationwide by offering vital information and advice to cut carbon footprints.
