Swanley man jailed for brutal domestic abuse including strangulation and assault

Nightmare relationships fuelled by control and violence

Darrell McArdle, 24, from Swanley, has been locked up for a string of horrific domestic abuse offences. His reign of terror targeted two women, trapping them in abusive relationships marked by physical violence and psychological torment.

McArdle controlled every move. He banned the victims from talking to other men or seeing friends. Refusal meant violence.

Shocking assaults and social isolation

One victim, who met McArdle in February 2020, suffered months of escalating abuse. She was beaten, isolated, and threatened, including threats against her own family. In June 2021, the abuse peaked with McArdle repeatedly punching her and even tearing a tooth from her mouth.

The second victim faced a terrifying attack on 21 November 2023. McArdle broke into her Maidstone home, physically assaulting and strangling her.

Justice served after West Kent investigation

McArdle’s arrest came thanks to the West Kent Vulnerability Investigation Team. At Maidstone Crown Court, he pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour and two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

On 29 April 2024, McArdle was sentenced to two years in prison and slapped with a five-year restraining order relating to one victim.

Detective condemns McArdle, urges victims to speak out

“McArdle is a violent bully and coward,” said Detective Constable Joe Yandle. “The bravery of the victims in coming forward cannot be overstated. Support is out there for anyone suffering domestic abuse.”

“If you’re facing abuse, you’re not to blame. Our team is working around the clock to tackle and prevent these crimes,” Yandle added.
