Manhunt launched after inmate breaks free from Gloucestershire prison

Escape from HMP Leyhill

A desperate manhunt is underway after 42-year-old Gary Rootham escaped from HMP Leyhill in Gloucestershire. The prisoner was last spotted by staff just before 5 PM last Friday.

Rootham fled wearing a dark Nike polo shirt, dark jogging bottoms, and black trainers with white soles.

Police issue public warning

Avon and Somerset Police have urged the public not to approach Rootham under any circumstances. If spotted, call 999 immediately.

He stands around 5ft 11ins tall, with short dark brown hair and usually clean-shaven.

Criminal past and known haunts

Rootham was serving sentences for driving offences, robbery, and burglary. He has known connections to Reading and Cornwall.

Escape spree continues across UK prisons

Rootham’s breakout comes just a day after another inmate fled from HMP Wormwood Scrubs in London. Graham Gomm, 63, escaped while being transferred to hospital but was caught and returned to custody this morning.
