Drones Deployed After Drivers Targeted on A2 and M20

Kent Police have launched drone patrols over hotspots on the A2 near Darenth and the M20 near Snodland. The move follows chilling reports of criminal damage against moving vehicles on these busy routes.

Objects Thrown at Cars—Serious Danger on the Roads

On the evening of Thursday, November 7, 2024, multiple motorists were hit by flying objects causing damage to windows and bodywork. At around 5:50pm on the A2, objects were fired from beside the road, shattering car windows. Hours later, between 9pm and 10pm on the M20, drivers reported similar damage, believed to be from items dropped off a bridge.

While police have yet to confirm a link between these incidents, they responded swiftly with increased patrols—including unmarked vehicles—and deployed drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras to monitor the areas for further crimes.

Chief Inspector Issues Stark Warning

“Throwing or firing items at moving traffic is incredibly dangerous, and it is fortunate nobody was injured as a result of either of these incidents. Anyone found to have been responsible for putting road users in danger can expect to be arrested and brought before the courts,” said Chief Inspector Craig West of Kent Police.

High-Tech Surveillance and Community Help

The drones patrol footpaths and wooded areas adjacent to the roads, allowing officers to spot suspicious activity quickly. Volunteer officers from the Special Constabulary are also supporting the patrols, boosting crime prevention efforts across the affected routes.

Kent Police are urging anyone with information to come forward. Reports can be made online at Kent Police Report quoting reference 46/189304/24 for the A2 or 46/190243/24 for the M20 incidents.
