Blaze Damages Fifth-Floor Apartment on Westbourne Park Road
Firefighters have issued a candle safety warning after a fire broke out in a block of flats on Westbourne Park Road in Royal Oak.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed that the fire, which severely damaged a four-roomed flat on the fifth floor, was caused by the unsafe use of a candle.
Residents Evacuate as Firefighters Battle Blaze
Three people left the building before emergency crews arrived, and no injuries were reported.
One of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders was deployed to provide an observation tower, helping firefighters tackle the blaze from above.
Control Officers received the first of 15 emergency calls at 8:14 pm, prompting the dispatch of six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from stations in Paddington, Kensington, and West Hampstead.
The fire was brought under control by 10:02 pm.
Fire Brigade Warns of Candle Risks
Following the incident, the London Fire Brigade reiterated the dangers associated with unattended candles, urging residents to take precautions.
An LFB spokesperson said:
“Candles are one of the most common causes of fire. It’s really important that you never leave a candle unattended and keep them away from anything that can easily catch alight.”
They advised considering battery-powered, flameless LED candles as a safer alternative, adding:
“While LED candles may cost more upfront than traditional ones, they last considerably longer, offering better value for money.”

For those using traditional candles, the LFB recommends:
- Placing candles in a heat-resistant holder on a stable surface
- Keeping candles away from flammable materials
- Never leaving candles unattended
- Taking extra care with children and pets
- Blowing out candles before going to bed
