Man and Woman Arrested for Murder After Two-Year-Old Girl Dies from Head Injuries

A man in his 20s and a woman in her 30s have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a two-year-old girl who suffered serious head injuries.

Northumbria Police confirmed the arrests on Wednesday, 15 May 2025, as part of an ongoing investigation into the child’s tragic death. The girl was taken to hospital on Easter Monday, 21 April, after a report of concern for her welfare. Despite medical efforts, she died three days later, on 24 April.

Initial Arrests Upgraded to Murder Charges

The suspects were previously arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent shortly after the incident. However, following further inquiries and post-mortem examination results, officers have re-arrested the pair on suspicion of murder. They have since been released on bail pending further investigation.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said:

“We can confirm our enquiries remain ongoing following the tragic death of a two-year-old girl from the Houghton-le-Spring area last month.

As part of our investigation, we re-arrested a man in his 20s and a woman in her 30s yesterday, both on suspicion of murder.

Our thoughts continue to be with the girl’s family and all of those affected by this tragedy. We would ask everyone to avoid speculation both online and in the community.”

Community Reaction and Ongoing Appeal

The incident has shocked the Houghton-le-Spring community, and residents have been urged to refrain from speculation while detectives work to uncover the full circumstances behind the child’s death.

Police are continuing to appeal for information that may assist their inquiries. Anyone with relevant details is encouraged to contact Northumbria Police via their non-emergency number 101, quoting the reference associated with the case.
