Investigations are ongoing after a devastating fire tore through Bicester Heritage on Thursday, 15 May, claiming three lives – including two brave firefighters and a local man. The incident has been dubbed one of the darkest moments in recent fire service history.

The victims have been formally identified:
- Jennie Logan, 30, firefighter with Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service
- Martyn Sadler, 38, firefighter serving both Oxfordshire Fire and London Fire Brigade
- David Chester, 57, local member of the public from Bicester
Two other firefighters injured in the blaze remain in hospital in stable condition. They are receiving ongoing support from emergency services.
“Our thoughts remain with all those involved following this tragic incident,” said Assistant Chief Constable Tim Metcalfe of Thames Valley Police.
Complex Investigation to Take Time
Authorities warn the investigation will be lengthy due to the scale and complexity of the fire scene. Police and fire officials are refusing to speculate on how the blaze started or the chain of events that led to the fatalities.
“Our enquiries are ongoing, but this is a complex investigation which may take some time,” added ACC Metcalfe.
Support comes from the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) and health and safety experts as the probe continues.

The tragedy has sparked nationwide grief. Floral tributes cover Bicester Fire Station, while messages of condolence flow from fellow emergency services, government officials, and the public alike. A book of condolence is open at St Edburg’s Church, where a reflection service will be held.
This blaze ranks among the deadliest firefighter incidents in the UK since 2023, highlighting the immense dangers faced by emergency crews.
