Sea Water Pumped In to Quench Raging Recycling Centre Fire

Eight fire engines, two aerial ladders, and an incident command unit from Eastleigh are on the scene. Fire crews are pumping a staggering 16,000 litres of water per hour, drawing directly from the nearby sea to douse 140 tons of burning recycled waste. Massive yellow pipes snake along the Marchwood industrial estate as firefighters smash windows to direct jets of water through entry points.

Hampshire Fire Rescue Confirm Long Haul Operation

“We received several calls reporting the fire and smoke,” said a Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokesman. “We initially sent two appliances from Hythe and one from Redbridge, rapidly increasing to eight pumps. Crews also came from Eastleigh, Southampton, Hightown, Fareham, Basingstoke, Beaulieu, and Southsea. Around 14 firefighters, all in breathing gear and armed with hoses, are painstakingly working through burning rubble. We expect to be here for some time.”

The fire is still ongoing, with crews battling the stubborn blaze that threatens Marchwood’s recycling operations and local air quality.
