A significant emergency services presence was reported in Woolwich on Monday evening after concerns were raised for the welfare of a person believed to be in the River Thames near Royal Woolwich Arsenal Pier.

The incident prompted a response from the London Ambulance Service (LAS), police, and river emergency teams, with witnesses describing multiple ambulances and officers attending the scene along the waterfront. Some river transport services were temporarily affected, with Uber Boat by Thames Clippers confirming that Royal Woolwich Arsenal Pier had been closed due to a “medical emergency.”

Members of the public took to social media expressing concern, with one resident writing: “Another large ambulance and police presence for someone in the Thames. Should we be worried about using the Uber Boat? How can we find out more information about why these incidents are happening?”

It is not currently known what led to the incident or the condition of the person involved. Emergency crews are trained to respond rapidly to reports of people entering the water, which can include medical episodes, accidents, or welfare-related concerns.

Public Safety and River Travel

Authorities have not issued any wider safety warnings regarding river transport, and services typically resume once emergency operations conclude. Incidents involving individuals entering the Thames, while distressing, are relatively uncommon compared to the large number of daily passengers using river services across London.

Anyone concerned about safety when travelling is advised to follow operator guidance, remain behind safety barriers, and alert staff immediately if they witness someone in difficulty.

Emergency services have not yet released a full statement, and enquiries are ongoing.

Anyone experiencing distress or worried about someone’s well-being is encouraged to seek support. In the UK, Samaritans are available 24 hours a day on 116 123.
