Care Worker Jailed for Ripping Off Vulnerable Man
Alana Squire, 37, from Brough With St Giles near Catterick, has been jailed for three years after admitting fraud by abuse of position.
Trusted Carer Turns Into Heartless Thief
Squire worked for a care company looking after a man in his 60s at his Richmondshire home. Over three years, she visited him on evenings she wasn’t on duty. Gaining his trust, she helped herself to his bank card, withdrawing cash before returning it.
The victim, who remains unnamed to protect his identity, initially lent Squire money out of sympathy. But he grew alarmed as his savings started to vanish — with no repayments in sight. Worried that cutting her off would leave him isolated, he hesitated to act.
Shock £46,751 Theft Exposed by Police
Concerns arose in December 2020 when Squire left the care company. The man suspected she’d taken around £14,000, and she admitted to borrowing £9,000 during police questioning.
But a deep dive by North Yorkshire Police detectives and financial experts revealed the shocking truth: Squire had stolen a staggering £46,751.
Police Condemn ‘Sickening’ Betrayal
“This was a sickening abuse of trust in which Squire simply helped herself to very significant sums of money,” said PC Michael McVay, who led the investigation.
“Even when confronted with evidence, she showed no remorse and denied wrongdoing. But our thorough inquiry uncovered the full extent of her crime.”
“The manipulative way she committed this offence is awful. Victims’ lives can be devastated by so-called friends exploiting their vulnerability.”
“If you think you’re a victim of such crime, contact North Yorkshire Police on 101. Support is available and concerns will be taken seriously.”
