A quick-thinking Nottingham taxi driver took a passenger straight to a police station after becoming suspicious that he was trying to pay his fare with counterfeit £20 notes.
The incident happened at around 11.30pm on Tuesday, October 13, after the passenger booked a journey from Nottingham Road.
During the trip, the man reportedly changed his destination several times, prompting the driver to become suspicious.
When asked how he intended to pay, the passenger handed over a £20 note which the cabbie believed was counterfeit because of how it felt.
Police said further notes were then produced, which the driver also suspected were fake.
Instead of continuing to the requested destination, the driver headed to Radford Road police station, where the passenger was arrested.
Officers later searched the suspect’s home and found a Rambo-style knife hidden beneath a mattress.
Cannabis cultivation equipment was also seized, although police said no further suspected counterfeit notes were discovered.
A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of using counterfeit currency and possessing an offensive weapon in a private place.
Neighbourhood Inspector Liz Gaskin praised the driver’s actions, describing them as a “fantastic piece of work” which led to an arrest and the discovery of a dangerous weapon.
