Met Police Arrest Man Over Offensive Chelsea FC Tweets

Early Morning Arrest in Retford

Officers from the Met’s Central Football Unit swooped on a Retford address in the early hours of Monday, 8 February. A 21-year-old man was arrested following an investigation sparked last year when Chelsea FC flagged a series of offensive and hateful tweets.

Investigation Still Underway

The suspect has since been released under police investigation as enquiries continue. The case marks a key moment in cracking down on online abuse linked to football.

Met Vows to Tackle Online Trolls

Inspector Matt Ashmead from the Central Football Unit warned: “This action proves that the internet is no safe refuge for trolls to target people with hateful, offensive or racist abuse. Online abuse is not victimless and we will look to identify those responsible and take action.”
