UK’s First LGBT+ Sexual Violence Helpline Launches in London
London charity Galop has launched the UK’s first dedicated helpline for LGBT+ victims of sexual violence and abuse. The move aims to fill a major gap in support services tailored to the LGBT+ community.
Shock Figures Reveal Half of LGBT+ People Face Sexual Violence
Galop’s new research reveals a staggering 53% of LGBT+ people in the UK have endured sexual violence. Even more alarming, over half of survivors believe their assault was linked to their LGBT+ identity.
Support from mainstream services often falls short. Just 22% of LGBT+ survivors who sought help from non-LGBT+ specific services reported satisfaction with their experience.
“There were a few times I felt like I was speaking a foreign language and had to explain some really basic stuff,” said one survivor, describing the struggle accessing mainstream support.
Lord Michael Cashman Backs Groundbreaking Helpline
Lord Michael Cashman CBE praised the initiative, saying: “The queer community have largely been invisible in conversations about sexual abuse. This helpline is groundbreaking.”
He added: “Any LGBT+ person facing abuse can now access support that understands their identity and experiences. Trauma care must include compassion for who you are.”
