Firefighter Brutally Attacked During Flames in Thornton Heath
Blaze Erupts in Early Hours
Chaos unfolded just after midnight when four fire crews and an aerial ladder platform raced to a blazing multi-residential block on Kensington Avenue, Thornton Heath. Thick smoke poured from the roof, signalling a serious fire.
Firefighters Ambushed While Rescuing Residents
As crews in breathing apparatus entered the property to evacuate residents, violence erupted. Two firefighters were attacked with punches. One suffered jaw injuries that could have been far worse without his helmet. Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was discharged. The second firefighter was taken to Croydon Hospital for treatment.
Investigation Launched Into Fire and Assault
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has opened an investigation into the cause of the fire, while Metropolitan Police probe the unprovoked assault on the emergency workers. The firefighters involved are believed to be based in Norbury.
LFB Deputy Commissioner Condemns Attack
“This abhorrent and unprovoked attack on a firefighter is completely unacceptable,” said Richard Mills, Deputy Commissioner of the London Fire Brigade. “During a global pandemic, when all emergency workers are going above and beyond, this behaviour is even more shocking. Without his helmet, the firefighter could have suffered serious head injuries.”
“We take all assaults on our frontline workers incredibly seriously and have backed the Assaults on Emergency Workers Act to increase sentencing. We will support the Metropolitan Police fully in their investigation.”
