Joint Police and Paramedic Unit Extended Across North Kent
A unique joint unit of Kent Special Constabulary officers and South East Coast Ambulance Service paramedics is proving a hit – so much so, it’s been expanded across North Kent.
Launched in March 2018, the Joint Response Unit originally covered Medway and Swale two days a week. Now, thanks to its success, it operates seven days a week at peak times – covering Dartford, Gravesend, Medway, and Swale – with extra police officers on board.
More Boots and Medics on the Ground
The unit pairs two Special Constables with a paramedic who attend incidents together where both police and medical help are needed. Since its launch, they’ve tackled over 2,750 calls – ranging from vehicle crashes and assaults to medical emergencies and mental health crises.
By working side-by-side, officers have stopped drug and alcohol-fuelled incidents from spiralling out of control, allowing paramedics to treat patients safely at the scene. This teamwork was praised as “outstanding practice” in a Care Quality Commission report and has helped reduce strain on both emergency services.
Leaders Praise the Groundbreaking Partnership
Superintendent Jason Wenlock of Kent Police’s Citizens in Policing Team said: “This initiative has proved an effective and efficient way to improve response times for the public. We can now provide quicker police and medical assistance, prevent situations from escalating, and quickly assess if more support is needed at incidents. I’m thrilled this service is expanding across North Kent.”
Will Bellamy, Paramedic and Operating Unit Manager for North Kent, added: “Moving to a seven-day model is fantastic. There’s a huge overlap in incidents we attend with police colleagues. This joint approach brings real benefits for patients and improves understanding of each other’s roles.”
