An Iraqi asylum seeker has terrorised fellow refugees by torching two taxpayer-funded hotels, a court heard. Rawand Abdulrahman, 37, admitted setting the fires but insists he never intended to put lives at risk.
Asylum Seeker Sets Two Fires in Just Over a Week
Abdulrahman struck twice within eight days. First, he set beds ablaze at the Phoenix Hotel in North Weald, just five miles from Epping. Then, he reignited chaos at the infamous Bell Hotel in Epping — both hotels sheltering refugees funded by the public purse.
Major Damage, But No Casualties
- March 28, 2025: Fire at Phoenix Hotel destroyed the entire left wing.
- Quick action from staff meant no injuries.
- After being moved to Bell Hotel, Abdulrahman struck again on April 5, torching beds and damaging rooms and corridors.
- Thanks to the building’s layout, the second fire was swiftly contained.
Admits Arson but Denies Putting Lives in Danger
At Chelmsford Crown Court, prosecutor George Penny confirmed both hotels exclusively housed refugees. Abdulrahman claims to be an Iraqi sheep farmer, though officials have yet to verify this.
He has admitted setting the fires and accepts he intended or was reckless about causing property damage. But as the court heard:
“He denies deliberately or recklessly endangering lives.”
The case continues as Abdulrahman faces serious charges over his dangerous acts.
