Sgt Dunn pleaded guilty at Leeds Magistrates’ Court to causing unnecessary harm to an animal under the Animal Welfare Act. He was filmed repeatedly punching his puppy after it had an accident in the house.

  • He was banned from owning animals for five years.
  • Had been on restricted duties during the investigation by West Yorkshire Police.

GMP Chief Slams Dunn’s ‘Disgraceful’ Behaviour

“Greater Manchester Police expects the highest standards of conduct from its officers, both on and off duty, and Dunn’s actions clearly fell far short of these standards,” said Chief Superintendent Michael Allen, head of GMP’s Professional Standards Branch.

He added that public trust is vital and the officer’s cruelty “brings the profession into disrepute” and damages confidence in the police.

Independent Panel: Instant Sack Needed to Protect Public Trust

Paul Forster, chairman of the independent disciplinary panel, confirmed the dismissal policy.

“Hearings like this are about the individual but also about much more, with bigger and wider considerations in play. Therefore, the most appropriate outcome is dismissal without notice.”

Dunn’s defence admitted the abuse was an isolated incident and accepted the allegations without reservation.

West Yorkshire Police’s criminal investigation, supported by the Crown Prosecution Service, led to his conviction and ultimate firing from GMP.
