Drink-Drive Killer Jailed Over Deadly Crash in Weedon

A man has been slammed with a five-year, four-month jail term for a fatal drink-drive smash that claimed a beloved pensioner’s life. On June 8, 2023, 76-year-old Keith Turnidge was quietly sitting on a bench in Weedon’s Bridge Street when he was struck by a car. Tragically, Mr Turnidge died in hospital two months later.

Drunk Driver Caught and Banned for Nearly Eight Years

Derren Goddard, 51, from Harmans Way, Weedon, was over the legal alcohol limit when he hit Mr Turnidge. Despite trying to deny the charge, Goddard pleaded guilty at Northampton Crown Court on July 21. Today, October 10, he was locked up and slapped with a 92-month driving ban.

Police Blast “Avoidable” Tragedy

“Keith was a popular, well-liked character in Weedon,” said Detective Constable El Hudson from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit. “He was just sitting peacefully when Goddard, who’d been drinking in the nearby pub less than 400 metres away, chose to get behind the wheel. That terrible decision cost Keith his life.”

“Our investigation proved Goddard’s guilt despite his claims of a medical blackout. No sentence can undo this harm, but we hope the family and community find some comfort in justice being served.”

Detective Hudson also praised local forensic teams and residents who came to assist after the crash. Anyone affected by serious or fatal road collisions can get help from Voice Road Harm at www.voicenorthants.org/roadharm.
