Prison Officer Jailed for Steamy Affair with Inmate
A female prison officer has been locked up after a scandalous relationship with a prisoner was uncovered. Toni Cole, 29, sent a staggering 4,369 intimate messages, took part in 18 video calls, and had physical contact with an inmate at HMP Five Wells in Northamptonshire.
Jailhouse Romance Turns Into Criminal Misconduct

The illicit affair ran from 9 December 2022 to 25 January 2023 before prison officials caught on and launched an investigation.
Jail Time for Cole and a Troubled Prison
Cole, from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office. Northampton Crown Court sentenced her to 12 months behind bars. She is the second female officer at HMP Five Wells convicted for similar offences.
This £253 million G4S-run prison has been rocked by multiple staff-inmate scandals. Last summer trainee officer Rachel Stanton was jailed for a relationship with an armed robber caught on CCTV. Another female officer was suspended and arrested for similar misconduct in December 2024.
Besides scandals, HMP Five Wells faces criticism over drug smuggling, staff safety fears, and food shortages — raising serious questions about how the prison is run.
Authorities Crack Down on Prison Misconduct
“Prison officers hold a position of trust, and any abuse of this responsibility will not be tolerated. Cole’s actions compromised the integrity of the justice system and put staff and inmates at risk,” said a spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police.
Officials promise tighter security and stricter staff oversight to prevent future breaches at HMP Five Wells.
