Grandfather Beaten to Death Over £30 Drug Debt in Kennington
Shaun McEvoy, 56, a beloved grandfather, was savagely attacked over a £30 drug debt in Kennington last year. Dedan Simmons, 40, from Clapham Road, Stockwell, was found guilty of McEvoy’s murder at Woolwich Crown Court in February.
Brutal Attack Sparks Family Heartache
On February 15, 2023, Simmons stormed into McEvoy’s flat demanding payment for drugs. When confronted, Simmons launched a vicious assault, stomping repeatedly on Shaun’s chest until he collapsed. Shaun later died from his injuries.
His daughter, Carla, described her dad as having a “heart of gold” despite his long struggle with addiction. She tearfully said, “My children will never know their grandfather because of this senseless violence.”
Family Remembers a Loving Man Lost Too Soon
At sentencing, Carla shared heartfelt memories of Shaun’s generosity and support, especially after she became a mother. Despite their ups and downs, he remained a caring presence in her life.
Shaun’s brother, Martin, called him “lovable and kind-hearted” and mourned the future they’ll never share. “I hope one day I can forgive,” he said.
Prosecutor Details Savage Assault Over “Trivial” Sum
Prosecutor Anne Whyte revealed how Simmons forced his way into the flat, demanded cash, then flew into a rage when resisted. Simmons assaulted Shaun mercilessly and threatened others, showing no regard for human life.
Simmons now faces a life sentence. Shaun’s family are left shattered, robbed of any chance to see him fight his demons and rebuild.
