Orpington Teen Gets Suspended Sentence for Alleyway Sex Attack

Brian Jasper Cole, 19, from Orpington, escaped jail with a suspended sentence after sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl and threatening her with a knife in an alleyway. The attack happened in Forest Hill in December 2020 during Cole’s 16th birthday celebrations.

The Shocking Attack

Cole forcibly put his hands down the girl’s trousers in a secluded alley. When she fought back, he put her in a headlock and threatened her with a knife. Despite the frightening threat, the victim resisted until Cole released her and calmly walked away, a court heard.

Court Case and Sentencing

On May 24, Cole was handed a 15-month custodial sentence, suspended for two years. He must complete rehabilitation programs and 80 hours of unpaid work.

The judge took into account Cole’s age at the time and the time passed since the attack. Cole had also spent 14 months in custody for unrelated crimes and will now be released.

Prosecutor Details Violent Past

Prosecutor Frida Hussain KC told the court how Cole dragged the victim by her hair before the assault. He was found guilty of sexual assault and threatening with a blade but was acquitted of additional charges. The court heard of Cole’s troubling history, including involvement in incidents involving firearms and a previous rape case, from which he was acquitted.

Victim Speaks Out

“I am scared I’ll bump into him on my way to work,” the victim said. “The assault ruined my social life, made me isolate myself, and created trust issues. Four years on, I’m still living the same nightmare.”

Judge Explains Suspended Sentence

Judge Jonathan Mann KC stressed the suspended sentence was due to the offence being old, Cole’s age at the time, and no record of similar offending. “Given the long custody time already served, rehabilitation is the priority,” the judge said. Cole now faces strict conditions as he reintegrates into society, with hopes he will steer clear of further criminal behaviour.
