HGV Driver’s Dangerous A1 Police Chase Ends in Jail
Jason Standley, 42, sparked chaos on the A1 after refusing to stop for police near Cropwell on 2 November. The Crofton, Wakefield man recklessly drove his Iveco HGV dangerously close to pursuing officers, risking lives in a stunning police chase.
Tyres Popped, Chase Continues
Even after police expertly deployed a Stinger device that flattened his tyres, Standley pressed on for several more minutes. The chase finally ended when he abandoned the lorry near Fernwood, Newark.
Hiding in Underbrush: The Downfall
Standley tried to dodge arrest by hiding in undergrowth, but a sharp-eyed security guard from a local service station spotted him. Officers quickly swooped in to make the arrest.
Justice Served: Jail and Ban
At Nottingham Crown Court on 5 December, Standley pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving while disqualified. He was sentenced to 19 months behind bars and slapped with a six-year driving ban.
PC Haddon Smith from Nottinghamshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit warned:
“This was an extremely dangerous display of driving that could very easily have resulted in serious injury to police officers or other road users.”
He added:
“An HGV being driven like this poses a huge risk, so it was crucial we ended the pursuit quickly. It was a brilliant team effort, and I want to thank the brave security guard who helped officers detain Standley.”
Standley will now need to pass an extended driving test if he ever wants back on the road legally.
