Violent Robbery Shakes Darlington Alleyway – Two Charged

Brutal Attack in Narrow Alley

A man and woman have been charged with robbery following a vicious assault in a Darlington alley that left a woman badly injured and robbed of her handbag. The violent incident happened in the early hours of Sunday, 30 March 2025, in a tight cut-through between Columbia Street and Craig Street.

The female victim, whose identity remains confidential, suffered facial injuries needing hospital treatment. Durham Constabulary described her as “shaken and hurt” after the ordeal.

Fast Police Action Leads to Arrests

Darlington CID swiftly launched a high-priority investigation due to the severity of the violence involved. Their work led to the arrest of Rebecca Raper, 42, from Brighton Road, and Dean Nicholson, 30, of Flamingo Close, both locals.

The pair have been formally charged with robbery and made their first court appearance at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 3 April.

  • Neither defendant entered a plea during the initial hearing.
  • Nicholson was remanded in custody, underscoring the seriousness of the charges and perceived community risk.
  • Raper was granted bail but with strict conditions.
  • Both are due back before Teesside Crown Court on 8 May 2025 for a full hearing.

The alleyway attack has rattled Darlington residents. One told The Northern Echo: “It’s usually quiet here, especially at that time. It’s shocking something like this happened on our doorstep.”
