Burglary Turns Deadly: Pensioner Dies After Attack in His Own Home
A 20-year-old man has been jailed for nearly six years after a pensioner died following a brutal burglary in his own home.
Jack Tebbutt Sentenced After Manslaughter
Jack Tebbutt, from Wigston, Leicester, appeared at Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday, 26 January. He was handed a sentence of five years and 10 months for the manslaughter of 66-year-old Howard Staff.
Tebbutt had already pleaded guilty to burglary and perverting the course of justice. An 18-year-old woman, Taylor Williams, also admitted to perverting the course of justice and will be sentenced later.
The Fatal Break-In at Wigston Home
- Incident occurred on 13 January 2020 at Howard’s home in Gibson Close, Wigston.
- Howard, who was housebound and used a zimmer frame, confronted Tebbutt in the hallway.
- Tebbutt pushed past Howard, causing him to fall and become injured.
- The burglar stole cash before fleeing.
- Howard was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary but sadly died early the next morning.
Investigation and Arrests
Police launched a thorough investigation, including door-to-door enquiries and analyzing local CCTV. Tebbutt and Williams were arrested a week later.
“Mr Staff was of no threat to anyone. He was a family-orientated man who kept himself to himself, and we were determined to find who was responsible,” said Detective Inspector Jonathan Blockley.
“Mr Staff’s family remain devastated by his death, but I can only hope that the fact Tebbutt has admitted his crimes will go some way towards easing their pain knowing that justice has been done.”
Other men and teenagers arrested during the investigation were released with no further action.
