Calne’s Mark Cook Honoured with Top Policing Award
Mark Cook has been a familiar face on the Wiltshire beat for 17 years, with 11 of those years spent policing Calne. Yesterday, the local hero was caught completely off guard when the High Sheriff of Wiltshire, Lady Lansdowne, paid a surprise visit to Calne police station to present him with a prestigious award.
High Sheriff Praises Mark as ‘Best Example’ of Community Policing
Lady Lansdowne, Fiona Shelburne, hailed Mark as “the best example of excellent community policing.” She said:
“Born in Calne, he knows the town and surrounding villages inside out and uses that knowledge to great effect. Everyone loves him – he does so much good locally.
“He’s been the Bowood Bobby for years, often driving through the park to keep Bowood safe. I regularly see him around town while walking my dogs.
“Mark always has time for a chat. He’s approachable and connects well with all ages. At a time when trust in the police isn’t what it should be, Mark is the best ambassador Wiltshire Police could ask for to build strong community ties.
“It was a pleasure to surprise him with the High Sheriff award in my final week in the role. I think he thought he’d been called in because he was in trouble – but it was quite the opposite!”
Mark’s Pride in Serving His Hometown
Mark was visibly moved by the recognition. He shared:
“It’s really nice to have your work recognised like this. I’m just doing a job I love.
“I’m part of a larger team keeping Calne safe. We all work hard every day for our community’s wellbeing.
“The surprise visit from Lady Lansdowne completely took me back. It was great to chat about her work and future plans, especially on issues affecting the safety of women and girls.”
“I’m extremely proud to serve the town where I grew up and to give back to the Calne community every day.”
Colleagues Laud Mark’s Dedication and Impact
Sgt Mike Tripp, who works alongside Mark, praised his commitment:
“Mark’s dedication has led to countless positive results for both the police and the community.
“He’s well known and highly respected in Calne. This award reflects just how much the town values him.”
