Heartbroken Mum’s Grief Deepened After Baby’s Grave Trinkets Stolen in Upminster
A Sacred Spot Desecrated
Lucy Vermussche, a 35-year-old mum from Romford, was left devastated after discovering that precious items left at her baby daughter Grace’s grave were stolen. Grace, born prematurely at just 24 weeks, died weeks later and was buried at Upminster Cemetery on Ockendon Road on January 30 last year.
Lucy, who has seven children, visited Grace’s resting place twice a week until March 25 – when she found cherished mementos had vanished. Now, she visits daily, unable to leave her daughter’s side.
Stolen Treasures From Tiny Grace’s Grave
The pilfered items included seven beloved Winnie-the-Pooh Disney figures and a Stitch pencil gifted by Grace’s sister during their hospital stay at The Royal London Hospital. The grave, adorned with butterflies, flowers, and photos, also features a poignant inscription:
“In the garden of memories, your spirit dances with the butterflies.”
Lucy said: “Grace was a beautiful soul who deserved so much more time. Her resting place should be a space of peace, love, and respect – a place we can remember her with dignity. It’s devastating to know someone would take from a child’s grave. This isn’t just theft; it’s an insult to Grace’s memory and those who love her.”
Not the First Time – More Graves Targeted
Lucy revealed she might not be alone. On reporting the theft, she spoke with another cemetery visitor claiming similar items vanished from a different grave. Though cemetery officials promised to alert groundsmen, Lucy said installing CCTV isn’t an option, leaving her worried for others.
Community Calls for Respect and Security
The local community has rallied around Lucy, expressing shock and demanding better protection for grieving families. Upminster Cemetery referred enquiries to Havering Council, which has yet to issue a statement.
