Heroes of the Thames: Police and Security Officer Save Man from Freezing Waters

A Met Police officer and a Houses of Parliament security guard have been hailed as heroes after rescuing a man from the icy clutches of the River Thames. The dramatic rescue unfolded near Victoria Tower Gardens on Tuesday when staff alerted PC Habibi Syaaf and security officer Ron Dowson to a man who had fallen into the freezing river.

Fighting the Chill: A Race Against Time

The man was clinging to riverside steps, at risk of being swept downstream in sub-zero temperatures. PC Syaaf, part of the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Unit, recalled the tense moment: “When Ron and I got there, he was fully submerged and struggling to breathe.”

He added, “I reached down to the last step and urged him to give me his hand, but as I did, he lost his grip on a metal mooring ring and started drifting away. I just shouted, ‘Grab my hand!’ and managed to pull him back onto the first step.”

Teamwork and Bravery Save the Day

Ron Dowson quickly threw a buoy over the man, and together they hauled him to safety onto the riverbank. PC Syaaf’s colleagues stripped the man of his soaked clothes and wrapped him in warm blankets.

The father-of-two, a Met officer for 12 years but new to Parliament security, downplayed the drama: “I’m just so grateful he survived. I’m not a hero – Ron and I just did what we are trained to do and helped.”

Official Praise for Brave Rescuers

House of Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle praised the quick response and teamwork: “Had it not been for Ron, Habibi, and control room operator Dave Thomas who spotted the man, he could have drowned. We are lucky to have such brave security staff on duty.”

Home Secretary Priti Patel lauded the duo’s heroism: “It was an honour to meet Ron and Habibi. Their courage shows police and public working hand-in-hand to keep people safe. Neither hesitated to plunge into freezing waters to save a life. I’m proud to call them my colleagues in Parliament.”

The man received prompt medical attention and is now recovering.
