Isle of Wight Woman Killed in Horrific Head-On Crash on A35 – Two in Critical Condition

A tragic smash on the A35 Charmouth Road near Axminster has claimed the life of a 46-year-old woman from the Isle of Wight. The head-on collision between two cars left six injured, with two fighting for their lives in hospital.

Fatal Collision on Busy A35

The crash happened at around 6pm on Saturday, January 30th, just over the Devon border near the Hunter’s Lodge pub. A Honda from Dorset and a Vauxhall Zafira from the Isle of Wight collided head-on, causing devastating injuries.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the woman from the Isle of Wight died at the scene. Two other passengers in her vehicle remain in critical condition. Emergency services responded swiftly, with multiple ambulances, rapid response teams, a police helicopter, and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance called to the scene.

Serious Injuries and Major Road Closure

  • One victim was airlifted to Southmead Hospital in bristol/" title="Bristol" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Bristol with life-threatening injuries.
  • Five others were rushed by ambulance to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.
  • Four injured were from one car, two from the other.

The A35 was shut for several hours between Charmouth and Axminster while emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage and treat the injured. The road has since reopened.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Devon and Cornwall Police have launched an investigation. They urge anyone who saw the collision to come forward. Witnesses should call 101 quoting log reference 569 30/01/2016.

“At approximately 6pm on Saturday 30th January 2016 two vehicles were involved in a head on collision on the A35 Charmouth Road, Axminster. A 46-year-old woman from the Isle of Wight received fatal injuries. Two others remain in critical condition. Next of kin have been informed and enquiries are ongoing,” said a police statement.

Authorities continue probing the cause of the crash as the community mourns the loss of one of its own.
