10 Brits Busted in Massive Cocaine Cartel Sting
Ten British nationals have been arrested in a massive international cocaine smuggling ring. The three-year probe uncovered a slick network moving tonnes of cocaine from South America to Europe—powered by expats and savvy businesswomen laundering drug cash.
Drug Busts Across Europe
Seven arrested Brits lived in Malaga, Spain, one in Portugal. Half of the detainees are women, believed to be key players in the money laundering operation.
The turning point came on December 18, 2023, when French navy officers stopped a Spanish-registered yacht 1,200 miles east of Martinique. They seized a whopping 1.2 tonnes of cocaine. The skipper, a 30-year-old man from Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, and two other Brits were pinned down.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) estimates the drugs are worth around £96 million on UK streets.
More Seizures and Arrests
Joint efforts between Spanish Policía Nacional, Norway’s National Criminal Investigation Service, the US DEA, Europol, and others netted an extra 0.3 tonnes of cocaine. So far, 52 arrests have been made. Authorities also seized eight boats, 36 vehicles, guns, and ammo.
High-Level Cartel Boss and Routes Exposed
The cartel is led by a Norwegian trafficker with over 20 years of experience. Intelligence from 2020 revealed a British gang in Spain running a fleet of vessels transporting cocaine from South America—Brazil, Colombia, Guyana—to Europe via Spanish ports like Valencia, Alicante, and Malaga.
Close ties with Colombian and Mexican cartels helped coordinate drug production and shipments right up to Europe.
Money Laundering and Key Suspects
The investigation uncovered a global money laundering network, largely run by businesswomen reinvesting drug cash. Among those arrested in Malaga were three women from Boston, Lincolnshire, aged 19, 28, and 38, plus women from Essex and Nottingham, and men from Yorkshire and elsewhere.
Also nabbed was a 37-year-old man from Bracknell living in Portugal, the yacht skipper from Lewis, and a 34-year-old Scot.
