Wiltshire Police Launch Night Time Economy Crackdown This Weekend
Expect a heavier police presence in North and East Wiltshire town centres this Friday and Saturday night. Officers, backed by Special Constabulary volunteers, will patrol hotspots including Chippenham, Marlborough, and Devizes to keep the nightlife safe and sound.
High Visibility Patrols To Tackle Alcohol-Fuelled Violence
Insp Pete Foster said: “Many violent offences and anti-social behaviours are linked to alcohol consumption. This is unacceptable. We are committed to making our town centres safe places for everyone to socialise.”
He added: “The Police and Crime Commissioner’s survey shows many people don’t feel safe on a night out. We aim to change that, especially on this busy pay day weekend. Our increased presence will reassure the public and deter troublemakers.”
Boosting Safety with the Safer Nights Charter
As part of the operation, venues will be encouraged to sign up to the PCC’s Safer Nights charter. Created in partnership with Wiltshire Police, Wiltshire Council, and Swindon Borough Council, the charter aims to improve safety after a survey revealed only 3% of people feel secure at night.
Chief Insp James Brain said: “This links to our new Chief Constable Catherine Roper’s priority to slash violent crime and make our streets safer. If this weekend’s operation succeeds, we’ll roll it out across the county.”
