Bon Appetito! Celebrating Three Years of Meals on Wheels in Hampshire
Meals on Wheels Marks 3 Years Serving Hampshire
Apetito and Hampshire County Council are celebrating three successful years of their Meals on Wheels partnership this April. Since 2013, the service has been delivering hot, nourishing meals to over 1,500 residents across Hampshire. Those aged 55 and older who struggle to prepare food due to ill health or disability can sign up for regular or one-off hot lunches and afternoon teas.
Rising Demand and Favourite Dishes on the Menu
The popularity of Meals on Wheels has soared with a 55% jump in take-up over the past three years. Last year alone, 5,000 people relied on the service. Classic hits like Cottage Pie and Roast Beef still top the menu, but adventurous eaters are digging into meals such as Chicken Curry. Popular desserts include apple pie, rhubarb crumble, and apple & blackberry crumble.
Vital Nutrition and Social Support
“Good nutrition and hydration help to build up energy reserves which can really help people to stay well, especially during the cold and wet winter months,” said Councillor Liz Fairhurst, Executive Member for Adult Social Care.
The service also pairs up with Age Concern Hampshire’s Food and Friendship programme, offering valuable social contact for vulnerable older and disabled residents who may otherwise be isolated.
