Fourteen City Car Parks Get Top ‘People’s Parking’ Accreditation

Fourteen of the city’s car parks have bagged the sought-after People’s Parking accreditation, making it easier than ever for drivers to find spots tailored to their needs.

What is People’s Parking?

The scheme highlights car parks with special facilities for:

  • Disabled drivers
  • Parents with children
  • Electric vehicles
  • Commercial vehicles, camper vans, and wheelchair users

Customers can search online to find car parks offering the facilities they need.

Raising the Bar on Standards

The initiative isn’t just about convenience. It pushes car parks to up their game with clear signage, safe pedestrian routes, good lighting, cleanliness, and active management.

Portsmouth City Council led the charge, applying for and securing the accreditation for fourteen of its car parks, which will soon sport the official People’s Parking sign.

Voices Behind the Scheme

“Portsmouth is the first local authority I’ve presented with their accreditation and I hope others follow,” said Helen Dolphin MBE, who launched the scheme earlier this year. “We assess multiple factors including cleanliness, pedestrian access, and management. We’re also looking to add cycle parking and pay-by-phone options soon.”

Alan Cufley, Portsmouth City Council’s Director for Transport, Environment and Business Support, added: “We’re proud to have this accreditation on fourteen of our car parks. It recognises how well managed and accessible they are. We want to include more car parks and encourage other councils to join the scheme.”
