Heavy Delays Hit M20 and A2 as Freight Chaos Strikes Near Dover

Operation Brock Causes Major Road Closures and Jams

Kent Police and National Highways are battling traffic chaos near the Port of Dover. To ease congestion, the coastbound contraflow on the M20 is stacking lorries between junctions 8 and 9. The M20 junction 11 eastbound entry slip road remains shut to control freight heading for the Channel Tunnel, with jams reported near junction 11a.

The A2 eastbound is also closed between junctions of the A256 near Whitfield. This closure is to prevent freight from bypassing Operation Brock restrictions and directly accessing the Port of Dover.

Adding to the gridlock, the A20 Roundhill Tunnel eastbound is closed between M20 J13/A259/A2034 and the A260 in Dover as part of traffic management under Operation TAP.

Essential Diversion Routes for Local and EU Freight Traffic

Drivers – especially local and freight traffic – are urged to follow the hollow circle diversion signs:

  1. Exit the M20 at junction 8.
  2. At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto the A20 eastbound towards Ashford.
  3. Continue along the A20 through Harrietsham, Lenham, and Charing.
  4. At the Drovers roundabout, take the 1st exit to stay on the A20 towards the M20.
  5. At M20 junction 9 roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto the M20 coastbound to resume your journey.

EU freight should exit the M20 at junction 8 and rejoin via the entry slip road at the same junction.

Plan Ahead to Avoid Gridlock

If your route is affected, allow extra time or consider delaying your journey. Officials advise planning ahead to avoid getting caught up in the freight traffic nightmare.
