Magnox Motorbike Volunteers Race to Save NHS Lives
In a stunning show of commitment, Magnox staff have taken to the roads on two wheels, delivering vital medical supplies across the UK amid the Covid-19 crisis.
Riders Rev Up for NHS Deliveries
With demand for blood, plasma, and medical equipment soaring, volunteers are swapping office chairs for motorbike saddles. Jon Wood, a maintenance worker at Winfrith Site, has ramped up his volunteering with SERV Wessex, a free NHS support service covering Hampshire, Dorset, and South Wiltshire.
SERV Wessex riders transport everything from human milk to urgent medication, extending their usual evening runs into crucial daytime deliveries. Jon said, “It’s rewarding to know my efforts are making a real difference to vulnerable patients.”
Thousands of Miles, Hundreds of Critical Deliveries
Last week alone, SERV Wessex volunteers clocked 2,801 miles and completed 104 essential deliveries. Meanwhile, on the east coast, Phil Smith and Phil Sherriff from Sizewell A site are volunteering with SERV Suffolk and cambridge/" title="Cambridge" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Cambridge, supplying hospitals with urgent medical items.
Phil Smith, Engineering Manager and responder with SERV Suffolk, shared, “Dropping off urgent samples and products to hospitals not only helps patients but also saves the NHS money by cutting out costly taxis and couriers.”
Charities Riding High on Public Support
These lifesaving blood bike charities receive no government funding. They rely heavily on public donations, fundraisers, and charitable grants to keep engines running and supplies flowing.
