UK Launches Space Spy Camera to Guard Satellites from Orbit Chaos
The UK is stepping up its space game with a brand-new ground-based telescope in Cyprus, designed to track satellites and space junk in geostationary orbit. Dubbed Project ‘Nyx Alpha,’ this high-tech eye in the sky will help prevent risky collisions and shield Britain’s vital space assets.
Boosting UK Space Industry and International Teamwork
Beyond keeping satellites safe, Project Nyx Alpha aims to turbocharge the UK’s space sector by safeguarding existing jobs and creating fresh roles. The system will share crucial intel with international allies, strengthening global space partnerships and Britain’s strategic edge in space surveillance.
Spaceflux Takes the Helm
British space tech firm Spaceflux will build, operate, and maintain the cutting-edge telescope. They’ll collaborate closely with analysts at the UK Space Operations Centre in RAF High Wycombe, working under the watchful eyes of UK Space Agency and UK Space Command.
Top Brass Back Space Domain Awareness Push
Air Vice-Marshal Paul Godfrey, Commander of UK Space Command, unveiled the contract at the UK Space Conference in Belfast. “Space Domain Awareness is critical for defending UK and allied interests,” he stressed.
Dr Paul Bate, CEO of the UK Space Agency, added, “Operating safely in space is becoming more challenging. We are committed to ensuring a secure, sustainable space environment.”
Why Cyprus?
“Cyprus offers an unbeatable vantage point to monitor geostationary orbit,” said Dr Marco Rocchetto, founder and CEO of Spaceflux. The location enables better protection for the UK’s famed SKYNET military communications satellites and other assets.
Extra Space Data and National Command Centre on the Way
Alongside the telescope, UK Space Command and the UK Space Agency have snapped up Space Domain Awareness data from Spaceflux and Raytheon Systems, covering various Earth orbits. This info will aid both military and civilian space missions.
Plus, the National Space Operations Centre is set to launch next year, uniting civilian and military space monitoring to tackle space threats head-on.

All these moves tie into the UK’s National Space Strategy and Defence Space Strategy, which spotlight Space Domain Awareness as crucial. Keeping tabs on objects and threats in orbit ensures the UK stays ahead in the high-stakes arena of space security.
