Major M4 Crash Near Chippenham Leaves Several with Life-Changing Injuries
A horrific smash on the M4 northwest of Chippenham has caused serious injuries and brought motorway chaos. A lorry overturned in a nasty crash, sparking a huge emergency response and forcing the M4 to shut both ways.
Crash Details and Location
The smash happened around 9:10am today, Friday, October 20, 2023, on the eastbound M4 between junctions 18 (Bath) and 17 (Chippenham). A heavy goods vehicle (HGV) was involved alongside at least two other cars, including a Mini and another vehicle.
Emergency Services Rally to Scene
At least seven fire engines, including a heavy rescue unit, raced to the scene from Avon Fire and Rescue and Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service. Four ambulances, Hazardous Area Response Team crews, and the Great Western Air Ambulance were also dispatched to treat the injured immediately.
Motorway Still Closed – Avoid the Area
Due to the seriousness of the crash, the M4 remains closed in both directions at junction 17. The eastbound side is expected to be shut for most of the day, while the westbound could reopen later this morning. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and expect major delays.
A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “Emergency services are currently attending a serious collision on the M4 just inside the Gloucestershire border, between Junction 17 Chippenham and Junction 18 Bath.”
Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information to call 101 quoting log number 93 of today. Investigations into this devastating crash are ongoing.
