Chaos on the M2 as Car Flips Over in Dramatic Crash Leaving Drivers Stranded on Christmas Eve
Serious Crash Sparks Massive Delays on M2
A car overturned in a shocking smash on the M2 between Sittingbourne and Hempstead around 1pm, throwing the westbound carriageway into chaos on Christmas Eve. The vehicle hit the central reservation, flipped onto its roof, and ignited, sparking an intense emergency response.
Police, paramedics, firefighters, and National Highways traffic officers flooded the scene between Junction 5 (Stockbury Interchange) and Junction 4 (Brooms Wood Interchange). Witnesses described barriers being swiftly erected and a heavy emergency presence.
Road Closure and Major Diversions Frustrate Drivers
The westbound carriageway remains shut, causing massive tailbacks as thousands try to make their way home for Christmas. Drivers are urged to follow these diversion routes:
- Exit M2 at Junction 5 and head south on the A249
- Continue on A249 to Junction 7 of the M20
- Take M20 westbound
- Exit M20 at Junction 4 and join A228 northbound
- Follow A228 to Junction 2 of the M2
Police Investigate Serious Single-Vehicle Collision
“The collision is a single vehicle incident that struck the central reservation and came to rest overturned,” confirmed National Highways.
“Kent Police will carry out detailed collision investigations due to the seriousness of the incident. This means the road closure will remain in place throughout the afternoon,” officials added.
Traffic officers remain on site managing the scene and helping stranded motorists. Drivers are warned to expect ongoing delays and to plan alternative routes.
