M20 Westbound Shut After Multi-Vehicle Smash
A huge section of the M20 motorway is closed westbound this morning following a serious crash involving two lorries and two cars.
The pile-up happened just before 3am on Friday, 29 August, between Junction 9 (Ashford) and Junction 8 (Maidstone) on the London-bound side.
Emergency Crews Battle Chaos
National Highways confirmed all westbound lanes remain shut. Emergency services, traffic officers, and contractors are on the scene dealing with debris and repairing heavy damage to the central reservation barrier.
“The M20 in Kent is closed westbound between J9 (Ashford) and J8 (Maidstone) due to a multi-vehicle collision. Emergency services are on scene. There is a large amount of debris across the carriageway and damage to the central reservation barrier. National Highways contractors will be attending to assist with clear-up works and repairs.”
Drivers trapped inside the closure began being released from around 5.30am, officials said.
Bridge Inspections Underway as Weather Worsens
A nearby bridge is also being checked for possible damage following the crash.
The incident hits amid heavy rain and flooding risks spreading across southern England. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, with up to 70mm of rain forecast in parts of Kent, Essex, Sussex, Surrey, London, and south Wales.
Expect Delays as Repairs Continue
National Highways warned disruption could last into Friday midday while recovery and repair efforts take place. Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes and check traffic updates before travelling.
