A 27-year-old master’s graduate has set the internet alight after claiming that navigating the UK benefits system is like holding down a “full-time job.” Joshua Bishop from Edinburgh blasted the system as bureaucratic, draining, and downright humiliating.

Joshua, who finished his course last October, dreamed of leaving his council estate behind for a career in sales, marketing, or HR. But instead, he’s been stuck on Universal Credit, receiving just £400 a month while battling endless admin hoops.

Joshua’s video triggered a storm online, gathering over 900 comments. Critics slammed him as a “lazy scrounger” unwilling to work, with one snarling: “Comparing a full-time job to one meeting a week is bonkers.” Another snapped: “Loads of jobs out there – your attitude stinks!”
But not everyone was biting. Some sympathised with Joshua, sharing their own struggles with the system. One said: “Claiming benefits was such a hassle, I almost gave up. I was lucky to find work before it got worse.” Another told haters: “Try living on £400 a month and see how easy you think it is.”
Joshua Fights Back Against Bureaucracy
“They keep piling on homework,” Joshua explains. “I know what I want to do. Instead, I’m clocking meetings and admin that suck the life out of me. It feels like psychological torture.”
On a cheeky note, he hinted that TikTok might be his ticket out: “Maybe this TikTok thing will work, and I won’t need a real job anyway.”
Government Hits Back
The Department for Work and Pensions defended the system, insisting it supports millions through Universal Credit tailored to individual needs. A spokesperson said: “Our support incentivises moving into employment and progressing in work.”
The government claims it’s working on Jobcentre reforms to give claimants better help finding meaningful jobs.
