Health Strike Threats Quashed as Scottish Pay Rise Deal Wins Majority Backing
Unison and Unite Members Call Off Strikes
The looming threat of a NHS strike by Unison and Unite members in Scotland has been scotched. Both unions have accepted a new pay deal, delivering a hefty 7.5% pay rise for health workers. That means most NHS staff in Scotland are set for a much-needed pay boost of over £2,200 a year.
Ballot Drama Continues for Royal College of Nursing
While Unison and Unite have called a truce, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) ballot remains open until December 19. Last month, the RCN slammed the latest offer, saying it “still does not meet our members’ expectations.” The union had demanded at least 5% over inflation — currently at a whopping 11.1%. A strike ballot is underway but no strike dates have been announced yet.
Fierce Talks Secured Historic Pay Deal
The deal came after tough negotiations involving First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Health Secretary Humza Yousaf, NHS bosses, and union leaders. Unite’s general secretary Sharon Graham hailed the agreement as a hard-fought victory. “Unite makes no apologies for fighting for better jobs, pay, and conditions in the health service because NHS Scotland workers deserve to be fairly rewarded for the outstanding work they do day in and day out,” Graham declared.
Mixed Reactions Among NHS Staff
Although a solid majority said “yes” — 64% of 1’s members and 57% of Unite’s health members accepted the offer — the vote was far from unanimous. Unison’s health committee chair Wilma Brown warned the government this is “not a win” but rather “a warning.” She pointed out that nearly half of Unison NHS staff rejected the latest proposal, with many acceptors doing so reluctantly.
